Two Brief Items

- Do you think it was wise of the Red Sox to non-tender Chad Bradford? Yes he struggled against lefties at times, but we are talking about a guy with a 129 career ERA+ who was coming off of an injury last season, and given the Sox bullpen woes last year, stockpiling as many capable arms as possible in the pen would have seemed to me a better course of action. I think the Mets took a nice little flyer on the guy.

- Here’s a little John Flaherty trivia that Jeff brought up over beers with Mullet and me Tuesday night. Flaherty was prominently involved in two of the most memorable Red Sox regular season games of the last ten years. Do you remember the games and how Flaherty was involved?

I’mguessing he was in the Tampa Bay lineup for DLowe’s no-hitter and he was catching for the Yankees in the A-Rod facemask game.

  2. Sully Says:

Good try, SamW…but he was very prominently involved in the two games….if that helps.

Well, everyone remembers how, as the last guy off the bench (literally, thanks to other moves and Jeter’s famous encounter with the stands), he got the game-winning hit in the 13-inning game in July 2004.
And did he also break up a Pedro no-hit bid in the 8th or 9th while playing for the D-Rays? I think so.

  4. Sully Says:

Dr. Manhattan wins. Well played, sir.

  5. Dr. Manhattan Says:

Score one for the Yankee fan!

Damn. I should have figured this one would have been answered already…

The Pedro no-hitter was an absolutely amazing game; the only baserunner between the first pitch and the bottom of the ninth was the leadoff batter Gerald Williams, who got plunked and started a brawl, and as Pedro threw a no-no, Tampa Bay went completely insane, had their manager and three different acting managers tossed along with 4 pitchers, tried and failed to hit Brian Daubach 3 times… just insane.
