Drew Done
All we know at this point is that the Red Sox have added J.D. Drew. That, on its own, is a very good thing. The money is not yours, and in a market that doles out $100MM to the Carlos Lee’s of the world, is really not all that bad anyway.
Welcome, J.D. Looking forward to big things.
Reiterating your other article about Drew, I also say welcome. If they keep Manny and sign their #1 starter the Sox are a much stronger team. Everyone prattles on about Ortiz needing “protection” in the lineup(which I think is rubbish), imagine if the protection thing does really have an effect, how good is Manny going to hit this year! I find it extraordinary how much negative press comes out of Boston each year. Last time I checked these guys won it all in 2004 and weren’t we all grateful for that? Have we turned into Yankee fans by expecting a championship and 100+ wins every year? As long as the team is competitive and has a shot at the playoffs; that’s good enough for me.
Amen, Hugh. And now, Lugo. Drew + Lugo > Manny + A-Gon so even if Manny goes for some young arms the Sox are a better team. Add Matsuzaka, and we are starting to talk about a very good club again.
If only we could square this ‘pen away.
Glad to see him here. I wish people would get past the money thing. Like the original post said…it’s not our money. I know the money can effect the long term ability of a team to acquire talent, but the Sox will earn over $1 Billion in the next 5 years, so they can afford it.
Why pick on Carlos Lee? In a year where we see no upside, average at best players such as Gary Matthews, Ted Lilly, and Gil Meche all making at least 10 mil a year, why even mention Carlos Lee? Lee is a middle of the order presense that the Stros desperately needed. His deal was one of the better ones this off-season… and for only an extra 2.5 mil a year, arguably a better value than Drew. Of all the bad deals this offseason, why choose Lee as the “in a market where so and so can get this” guy?
Lee’s Career OPS+: 113
Drew’s Career OPS+: 133
They’re the same age, play the same position and Lee can’t field a lick. They’re on different planets as players.
