My eyes tell me exactly what yours do — Ells is terrific. But couldn’t he both execute amazing diving and leaping catches AND read the ball poorly and fail to get quick jumps, making him appear better than he is?

Clearly UZR has some flaws. The last UZR I saw for Mark Teixeira had him actually negative.

Which is insane. And there are others.

If you know baseball and are halfway objective, you can trust what your eyes are telling you. The flaw lies in assuming that certain stats are infallible, even when confronted with contradictory empirical evidence.

Ellsbury is not a -14 center fielder.

That’s kind of what I’m asking. Are our eyes deceiving us? Probably, to some degree. But has he been THAT bad? Has he really be one of the worst (look at the list) defensive CF’s in the game this season?
